Visit to Fiach Mac Hugh’s place of execution

On the 25th of July 2012 Lt.-Col. Charles Artaud Byrne CCR visited Ballinacor estate in Wicklow where he was guided to places of personal interest by estate worker Declan Byrne. One of the most memorable moments was the visit to the Fananierin, the very spot where Fiach Mac Hugh was executed by the English in 1597.
Charles was accompanied on his visit by Derek Byrne, Edward Byrne Jnr. and Edward Byrne Snr. Together they said a prayer in silence at the place where Fiach lost his life.
Another great moment came as the party drove out of the estate when the ancient buriel site of Charles’ ancestors was pointed out to him across a field.
Following lunch, all four travelled to the graveyard of the Seven Churches in Glendalough were more relatives of Charles, the Croney Byrnes, are interred. Derek, Edward Jnr. and Edward Snr. were also able to visit the grave of one of their ancestors, Edward Byrne of Downings.
It was a very emotional day and an historic moment for Clan O’Byrne of Leinster.

Statement on reconition of titles

Finte O’Broin and Clan O’Byrne of Leinster have been criticised recently for promoting the false use of titles. This has not been our intention and some errors of judgement are now in the process of being corrected.

We intend, however, to continue with the system of “Guardianship” of a name or family pedigree as we see the importance of this in maintaining the history, culture and identity of our noble name.

The changing nature of genealogy and fresh evidence means that guardianship may change in light of superior pedigrees.

It is our express intention to act as custodians of ancient lines of the O’Byrne so that they may be passed on to future generations.

National Day of Commemoration

Today is National Day of Commemortion in Ireland and Clan O’Byrne of Leinster would like to pay tribute to all of those who have fought and given up their lives for Ireland and the Irish people.

Please spare a thought today for those who have paid the ultimate price throughout the ages, especially the many Byrnes who died so bravely so that we may have a life of dignity, equality and freedom.

Today, I remember my great, great, great, great uncle James Byrne who was executed with Robert Emmet in 1803 at the age of 18.

Now that we are in peace, may we never forget their bravery and their sacrafice.

Byrne clan raise over 8,000 euro in MS charity walk

Congratulations to Edward Byrne and the Byrnes of Cloncurry and Kilcock who raised 8,300 euro for MS Ireland during a three day charity walk along the Royal Canal.

The walk was organised by Edward Byrne, researcher with Clan O’Byrne of Leinster, and took place during three days over the May bank holiday. The walk started at the ancestoral family home at Railway Terrace in Monaghan where the author James Dawson-Byrne was born in 1878 and continued along the banks of the Royal Canal to the family’s current home on the Navan Road in Dublin.

A core group of eight people, including Edward, completed the 60 mile treck over the three days but hundreds of people joined in at various stages along the route.

The motivation for the walk was to raise much needed funds and raise awareness of MS, a disease which hit the family personally when Edward’s uncle Pat Byrne was diagnosed with the disease just over ten years ago.

MS Ireland were on hand at the start of the walk and met up with the family for a much needed celebrationary drink at the Brefni Inn on the Navan Road at the end.

This was a unique event which incorprated the rich history of the Byrne family and included a ceremony at the Byrne family grave in Kilcock cemetry on the Sunday afternoon marking the 100th birthday of Edward’s grandfather John Byrne who was born in April 1912.

A cheque for 8,300 euro was presented to MS Ireland today at the Brefni Inn by Edward Byrne and his family.
